Assemblymember Michael Reilly (R-South Shore) On The Targeted Harassment

Assemblymember Michael Reilly (R-South Shore) on the targeted harassment and assault of New York City Police Officers:

“Mayor Bill de Blasio and all those who’ve participated in political grandstanding created this anti-police attitude. They have and continue to undermine the NYPD just to score political points.

What is happening now is the direct result of the Mayor, the New York City Council, and others who’ve blasted grand jurors and downplayed federal investigations that were conducted under administrations representative of both sides of the political spectrum. You may ask why — this is because the facts, the evidence, and the law do not align with their inflammatory narrative.

It has led us to this point. Police officers are being targeted for assault, threats, and humiliation. Officers are hesitant to take action because they fear being second guessed and not supported by those in charge at 1 Police Plaza or City Hall. Those in charge do not help — instead they join in on the public condemnation without allowing due process. Any loss of life is tragic, yet many are blind to the legal facts and misled by politicians who care more about their next office.

I wore the uniform and had to take action under extremely stressful circumstances. There are few people in this city who understand that burden. Our Police Officers deserve respect and I absolutely condemn the harassment and assault of our officers as they put their lives on the line to keep us safe.

Mayor de Blasio was elected to lead a city, not a movement. It is time for real leadership at City Hall!”
