Assemblyman Robert Smullen (R,C,I,SAM-Meco) issued the following statement following the approval of the Climate Action Council’s (CAC) Scoping Plan, which details how New York will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 85 percent from 1990 levels by 2050 and meet other climate goals set forth by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) of 2019.

“New York’s leadership is going full steam ahead to make the green new deal a nightmare. At a time when New Yorkers are paying more than ever before for groceries and home heating costs, climate zealots are unwavering in asking families to pay even more by mandating electric vehicles and expensive heat pumps to warm their homes.

“The CAC is intent on spending billions more to force nascent green technology on all sectors of our economy without so much as a cost-benefit analysis to back it up.

“Between their admissions that these green technologies fail to adequately heat homes in cold winter climates and outsourcing of wind power contracts to foreign entities, how can we believe they have the best interests of New Yorkers at heart?

“The CLCPA and its mandates have the potential to cripple our economy and force struggling families and seniors to pay thousands to retrofit their homes and buy electric cars. New Yorkers deserve better.”
