Smullen Organizes Picnic Honoring Veterans in The 118th Assembly District

Assemblyman Robert Smullen (R,C-Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks) hosted a veterans picnic at the Concordia Club in Gloversville yesterday, Sept. 4, 2025. Smullen was joined by Assemblyman Joseph Angelino (R,C-Norwich), Assemblyman Matt Simpson (R,C-Lake George), other state and local leaders, members of the 118th Assembly District community and fellow veterans residing in the Mohawk Valley. There were more than 500 veterans and guests in attendance.

“It was a privilege to organize this picnic and share a meal with so many courageous veterans living right here in the 118th Assembly District,” said Smullen. “Events like this are a great way to bring the community together and show our undying gratitude, respect and support for those who risked everything to keep us all safe. As a retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel who served three combat tours in Afghanistan, I had the opportunity to meet and get to know countless men and women on active duty. It was an honor to serve alongside them while working together to safeguard our national security.”

Smullen also presented a proclamation to the veterans picnic guest of honor, Peter Tautznik, a veteran from Fulton County. Peter served in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard, rising to the level of senior master sergeant, the second-highest enlisted rank, as a result of his demonstrated leadership skills. Peter earned numerous military decorations, campaign service awards and state awards throughout his military service, including three Air Force Commendation medals, two Air Force Achievement medals, seven Air Force Longevity Service awards, two National Defense Service medals, two Air Force Outstanding Unit awards, two Humane Service to New York State medals and four Long and Faithful Service awards.

“I was proud to present a proclamation to Peter Tautznik alongside my fellow assemblymembers,” Smullen continued. “Peter’s leadership, courage and unwavering commitment to serving our nation and the Mohawk Valley throughout his life are deserving of recognition. Peter, we thank you for your service.

“Special thanks to the Concordia Club for hosting our picnic, to Paul Catucci for collecting donations to help support our veterans and to all of the phenomenal volunteers who helped make this event a success. We must all do our part to give back and give thanks to those who served and continue to play a significant role in our Assembly District 118 community. To every veteran in attendance and others throughout our state and country: We thank you for your service and sacrifice.”
