Hawley Announces Canal Corp Grants
More than $225K to go to Orleans County for canal projects
Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,I,C-Batavia) today announced two grants totaling more than $225,000 to be given to Orleans County by the New York State Canal Corporation in an effort to boost tourism, recreation, historic interpretation, and community revitalization in regions adjacent to the Erie Canal.
“I am delighted that Orleans County has been awarded these important grants,” said Hawley. “The Erie Canal is one of the most important resources in this state, especially in our community, for the tourism and recreation it brings, as well as jobs.”
The Erie Canal Excursion Train Grant totaling $225,000 will go to support the acquisition of a pair of historic E-8 locomotive engines and one land acquisition of approximately one acre in the Village of Medina.
The second grant, totaling $17,220, has been pegged for the Medina Canal Loop Trail Enhancement Project which will complete the Loop Trail and provide a linkage between the canal towpath and the downtown business district.
“These projects are important catalysts to economic development and growth,” said Hawley. “These funds will help to preserve the canal’s vitality to our region while giving future generations the ability to enjoy it just as we have.”
In total, 54 Erie Canal Greenway grants were awarded statewide totaling $8.4 million. Overwhelming response from municipalities and not-for-profit organizations forced the Canal Corporation Board to increase allotment by $2.4 million.
