For the second consecutive year, the state Legislature has provided a special allocation of $14 million in capital funds for public library construction in the state budget. These funds are separate from the annual $800,000 allocation for public library construction.

“These grants are an important part of restoring a vital public resource, and I will continue to push for increased funding for libraries so that they may continue to serve the public as effectively and efficiently as possible,” said Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,I,C-Batavia).

The application materials for both construction programs are now available on the State Library’s web site at www.nysl.nysed.gov.

Local libraries must work with their library system and submit all application materials to the system. The deadline for receipt of applications is set by each library system. The deadline for libraries to submit applications to the State Library is Friday, September 14, 2007.

Libraries may apply for a construction grant that could fund up to 50 percent of a project. No award will be made for any project with a total cost of less than $5,000.

Eligible projects include the acquisition of a site and an existing building suitable for conversion to library purposes, construction, and renovation or rehabilitation of a facility.

“Libraries are an important resource for our children and their education,” said Hawley. “It is essential that our communities have functioning libraries with new books and updated technology so that citizens have access to the important benefits they provide.”

The grant program period is July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2010.
