Assemblyman Stirpe: Rides for Recovery Eases Logistical Burden for Those Seeking Recovery
“Everyone who struggles from substance use disorder deserves access to recovery treatment but far too often many simply lack the resources to get to lifesaving treatment or support groups. As a member of the Assembly Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, we look for ways to strengthen the support network for those seeking recovery services, which is why I’m proud to support a bill that creates Rides for Recovery, a program to provide free essential rides for those with substance use disorder (A.6945-A).
“The reality is that Medicaid does not cover transportation expenses for those needing recovery services including regular rides to support groups, court related appointments, employment opportunities, educational commitments, and other essential rides.Removing this logistical barrier ensures more New Yorkers seeking substance use treatment can better focus on their recovery.
I’m grateful to my colleague, Assemblyman Phil Steck (D-Colonie) for authoring it and call on my colleagues in the Senate to pass this legislative measure.
