“The ethics reforms we agreed on with the governor are a step toward restoring integrity in government. In the time I’ve worked in the Assembly, my focus has always been making sure government works for the families we represent. Not too long ago, my colleagues and I stood in a bipartisan fashion and called for the passage of legislation that would crack down on officials who violate the public’s trust by stripping them of their pensions (A.377). Today, I’m happy to announce pension forfeiture – which includes a constitutional amendment and puts it up to the people to decide – is part of this deal, which also ensures greater disclosure of outside income as well as independent expenditure reform. As your representative, it’s my duty, and honor, to stand with Central New York families and refuse to allow our voices to get drowned out by politicians and special interests.”

Note: The amendment to the New York State Constitution would strengthen the current “Public Integrity Reform Act,” which currently strips only pension benefits of convicted officials who entered the state pension system after the law took effect in November 2011. The new measure would expand to cover all sitting lawmakers.
