Assemblyman Stirpe: State Fair Combines New Attractions with Old Favorites

For many of us in Central New York, the summer season wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Great New York State Fair. For over a century, the fair has been a statewide tradition and fixture in our community, bringing families from all over the country to Central New York. With programs for everyone from small children to seniors, New Yorkers of any age can enjoy time spent with friends and loved ones while taking part in traditions old and new.

Every year, we return to our favorite attractions; for some, that means the butter sculpture and 25 cent milk tastings in the Dairy Pavilion, while others love to see the animal exhibitions or the sand sculpture. These old favorites will be returning this year, of course, along with many others.

Last year, the fair unveiled a new theme, “Summer’s Best in Show,” to highlight two of its most important aspects: showing off the best of New York’s agriculture and providing world-class entertainment. Along with a renewed mission, the fair has added many new and exciting attractions.

Following the success of last year’s Labor Day discount admission, the fair will be offering Three Dollar Thursdays, with admission just $3 dollars. And after years of asking for more healthy food options, this year visitors will also be able to enjoy more vegan and gluten-free meals, alongside the usual fried fare. And, just like the last two years, everyone can also sample some of the state’s finest foods and drinks at the Taste NY tent.

Another highlight of the fair are the themed days, honoring law enforcement and the armed forces, as well as welcoming groups like senior citizens with free admission. Dairy Day, one of the most well-attended days, serves to showcase Upstate New York’s robust dairy industry. Visitors can enjoy New York State cheese and yogurt, or stick around for the Dairy Day Parade.

I hope you’ll join me in celebrating a piece of Central New York’s history and enjoying some family-friendly fun at this year’s state fair. Advance tickets are available at a discount through Aug. 26, so plan ahead, pick a day and experience what New York State has to offer.
