Assemblyman Stirpe: Improvements to the State Fair Will Boost Our Local Economy

For over a century, the state fair has had tremendous success in attracting visitors from all over the country to Central New York. This year was no exception. Recently, I joined state leaders as we announced plans to build on the fair’s success and economic impact by making it a world-class destination for conventions and other events all year-round.

To accomplish this, significant state investment will be made to improve the fairgrounds itself and its array of facilities. I was proud to help secure $50 million in this year’s state budget to transform the grounds into a modern center that can host first-rate attractions throughout the year. This is the largest investment in the history of the state fair and represents an unprecedented commitment to improving our local economy and creating jobs.

The centerpiece of the fairground improvements will be a new Expo Center, designed to house a variety of events. This 110,000 square feet facility will be designed to complement the fairgrounds other historical buildings. The Expo Center alone is expected to generate $10 million in annual economic activity. Also, a new, modern equestrian facility will be built, emphasizing our region’s growing reputation as a center for equine-related business and events. Chevy Court, one the fair’s most popular attractions, will get a larger, modern stage and changes will be made to the viewing area to allow for 20 percent more seating.

Other planned changes include a relocated and expanded 16 acre Midway, a new RV park designed to accommodate 400 sites with full camper hookups, as well as a new and improved main entryway to improve access for those with disabilities and to make room for an electronic ticketing system.

The modernized fairgrounds will complement the recently opened Lakeview Amphitheater, creating a world class venue for performances, concerts and conventions. Combined, these venues will serve as an economic impetus, not just during the summer, but all year long.

Each summer, the fair provides an opportunity for Central New Yorkers to come together and welcome people from across the state to see all that our region has to offer. This substantial investment will build on this success and lay the groundwork for another century of high-quality products and year-round, world-class entertainment right here at home.

I’m confident that these upgrades will go a long way in helping the fair to reach its potential, while providing a major economic boost for our region, and I look forward to getting started.
