Assemblyman Stirpe: HEAP Can Help You Stay Warm This Winter
With winter right around the corner, frigid temperatures will soon set in. The benefit period for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is now open, and I encourage individuals who anticipate difficulty affording the cost of heating their home to apply for financial help.
HEAP is a federally funded program that helps eligible New Yorkers afford the cost of heating their homes. Nearly 1.5 million low-income New Yorker’s received HEAP benefits last winter, including over 60,000 here in Central New York. Eligibility is based on family size, household income and the home’s primary heating source as well as whether a person living in the home is under the age of 6, age 60 or older or is permanently disabled. Based on the program’s requirements, a family of 4 can make up to $51,792 annually or $4,316 monthly and still be eligible for a maximum of $625 toward their energy bill. A person may also qualify for HEAP if they already receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
Another component of HEAP – the Heating Equipment Repair and Replacement (HERR) program – ensures the functionality of household heating equipment. Homeowners that qualify for this program can receive a benefit amount of up to $6,500 to replace or repair boilers, furnaces or other essential heating equipment.
Applications for HEAP can be submitted online at www.mybenefits.ny.gov. or at the Onondaga County Department of Social Services. Onondaga County residents over the age of 60 should contact the Onondaga County Office for the Aging at 435-2362.
No one knows what this winter will bring. Fortunately, programs like HEAP can help keep you and your family warm this winter. If you have questions or concerns about this or any other community issue, please don’t hesitate to contact me at StirpeA@assembly.state.ny.us or by calling 452-1115.
