Assemblyman Stirpe: Legislation Removes Thruway Tolls for CNY Commuters
Assemblyman Al Stirpe (D-Cicero) announced that legislation he co-sponsored to increase commuter safety and reduce traffic congestion in the Syracuse area passed the Assembly and Senate. The legislation allows the Thruway Authority to issue annual short-distance commuter permits, which would allow commuters to travel from Thruway Exits 34-A through 39 at no charge (A.695).
“The Thruway is ideal for commuters because it’s safe and quick, but many people avoid it because of the tolls,” Stirpe said. “As a result, we see more traffic and congestion on our local roads, which puts drivers at an increased risk for accidents. This legislation removes cost barriers, enabling more people to take advantage of the Thruway.”
The legislation creates a permit to allow commuters traveling locally among Thruway Exits 34-A, 35, 36, 37, 38 and 39 to do so at no charge during peak commuting hours. It is designed to help alleviate congestion on local roads in the Syracuse area, saving commuters time and money every day. It would also reduce the risk of injury for commuters and reduce wear on local infrastructure.
