Assemblyman Stirpe: Stay Safe and Make Halloween a Frightfully Good Time

As we decorate our homes with pumpkins, cornstalks and cobwebs, it’s clear that fall is upon us and the spirit of Halloween is in full swing. While the holiday should be filled with treats and fun, remembering to be cautious and reminding your children to be safe is of the utmost importance.

Whether attending a school or community function, a local party or taking part in trick-or-treating, kids and adults should remember that the roads are busy and it’s always best to play it safe.

If venturing out with younger kids, move from house to house together, keep a watchful eye on them and stick to well-lit sidewalks. It will be dark early, so be careful crossing the street and watch out for vehicles that may be parking or exiting driveways.

Despite the urge to get from house to house, kids should also walk and not run. And be careful on steps. Each year, some children end the evening in urgent care from preventable injuries, including trips and falls.

If your kids are carrying a prop, ensure that it isn’t harmful to themselves or others. Also, remind your costumed kids to be wary of strangers and never get in a car of someone you don’t know.

Parents of older teens should also know their trick-or-treating route. Additionally, check in with them by phone or have them stop by the house during the evening.

For adults, Halloween celebrations can take on a variety of forms. But, whether you’re enjoying the evening at home, at a house party or another location, it’s important that you enjoy yourself responsibly. As with any other outing, never drive under the influence. Assign a designated driver or take advantage of newly-allowed ride-hailing services.

Halloween can be a time for fun celebration and sweets galore. With loads of events, attractions and parties to visit, I encourage everyone to prioritize the safety of themselves and others.

I wish everyone a happy and safe Halloween. As always, feel free to reach out to me about this or any other issue you may have by calling 315-452-1115 or via email at StirpeA@nyassembly.gov.
