Statement from Assemblymember Simon on Governor’s Decision to Indefinitely Delay Congestion Pricing

I strongly oppose the Governor's sudden backtracking & derailment of congestion pricing. I’ll vote against any plans that direct funds from other areas.

I’ve advocated for congestion pricing for almost 20yrs, first as a community activist. I proudly co-sponsored NY’s congestion pricing bill. Congestion pricing does far more than just fund MTA capital needs. New Yorkers deserve a dedicated funding stream to upgrade mass transit, but also an incentive to reduce traffic, which will improve air quality and the public’s health and safety. The decision to indefinitely delay congestion pricing is a major setback for climate justice, traffic reduction, and MTA funding. It also breaks NY's promise of accessibility to people with disabilities.

Congestion pricing has been studied for years, debated extensively in the legislature, opened to public comment and broad public engagement. $700 million of infrastructure is already in place just waiting to be turned on. Once implemented, history shows naysayers become supporters because the benefits begin to accrue – they can breathe more easily and cross the street more safely. Congestion pricing is the right answer for New Yorkers and their lungs.
