Valley Stream, NY – New York State Assemblymember Michaelle C. Solages, Deputy Majority Leader and Chair of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus, released the following statement following the EPA’s announcement regarding PFAS in drinking water:
“The Biden administration's finalization of strict limits on PFAS in drinking water represents a pivotal move to protect the health of millions, curbing exposure to these dangerous chemicals and potentially preventing countless cases of illness, including cancer.
This landmark regulation sets a firm commitment to prioritizing health equity and underscores the importance of addressing the environmental challenges faced by communities all across New York State. It’s a crucial stride towards ensuring that all communities have access to safe and clean drinking water, regardless of race or socioeconomic status.
This regulation also emphasizes the importance of collaboration with water utilities. By working closely with these entities, we can ensure effective implementation of the new standards and expedite efforts to reduce the level of PFAS in drinking water. Adequate federal and state funding is essential to support water utilities in upgrading infrastructure and implementing necessary treatment processes to meet the stricter limits on PFAS.
