Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages Statement on Long Island Foundation Aid Formula Hearing
Valley Stream, NY – In response to the Rockefeller Institute foundation aid hearing in Farmingdale, Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages, representative for the 22nd Assembly District and Deputy Majority Leader, issued the following statement:
“In 2007, New York State implemented a new method of school funding which relies on the foundation aid formula. For the working-class communities that I represent, this formula has proven ineffective in meeting the needs of students in our districts. This outdated procedure of allocating state funds to school districts has resulted in a 'Hunger Games' approach that leaves some Long Island children behind while propelling others forward.
What has become increasingly concerning are the racial disparities that correlate with the distribution of funds. Trends show that students from predominantly working-class backgrounds, immigrant families, and communities of color are not receiving equitable investments and educational opportunities.
We must ensure equitable support for mental health professionals, English language learners, and students with disabilities through the reinforcement of educational technology, after-school programming, advanced courses, and other critical initiatives in order for us to connect with the parents we engage with on a regular basis. Every child in New York has a constitutional right to a sound, basic education, and it is incumbent upon us to make that a reality.
As the needs of our students evolve, so must our methods of investment. I commend the Governor and my legislative colleagues for taking this step towards education parity and look forward to fully realizing our state’s commitment to equitably educate all New Yorkers.”
