Opening of New Valley Stream Long Island Cares Pantry
Valley Stream, NY – On Tuesday, Long Island Cares opened its new Valley Stream food pantry as part of Hunger Action Day.
The new West Nassau Center for Food Assistance & Community Support will provide essential support to families in need across the area, bringing resources to families in a dignified manner. Individuals can browse for the food items they need and even provide food for their pets thanks to the inclusion of Long Island Cares’ Baxter’s Pet Pantry at this location.
Since the pandemic caused a surge in demand for food assistance, Assemblywoman Solages worked with Long Island Cares to bring a permanent location to Valley Stream to meet the area's long-term needs. Food insecurity was on the rise during the pandemic and the following affordability crisis, and there was a clear need for additional resources and support for the community. Assemblywoman Solages secured grant funding with U.S. Representative Gregory Meeks to help Long Island Cares establish this new pantry. Assemblywoman Solages also assisted with securing the site at 241 Rockaway Ave.
"Long Island Cares has been an invaluable partner in combating food insecurity and providing critical assistance to families in our community affected by the affordability crisis,” said Assemblymember Solages. “The new West Nassau Center for Food Assistance and Community Support will offer essential resources and support, directly addressing the needs of our neighbors. The diverse programs available will have a lasting impact on our most vulnerable families.
“I'm proud to have supported Long Island Cares in establishing this new pantry in Valley Stream and look forward to their continued efforts in uplifting our community."
The pantry will be open Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Tuesdays are “Military Appreciation Tuesdays” and are open only to veterans, service members, and their families.
