Dear Neighbors,
Let me be clear, hate crimes and racial based-harassment will not be tolerated.
Unfortunately, recent reports have highlighted that there has been an increase in bias-related intimidation on a national and local level. Such crimes have the potential to divide communities and create a cycle of violence and hatred.
I truly empathize with individuals that feel attacked and discriminated against as a result of these sorts of brazen acts of hate. Last month, I attended a meeting with community leaders held by New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman’s Office which addressed hate crime enforcement in New York State. Attorney General Schneiderman stated clearly that his office will vigorously enforce all hate crime legislation that is in existence. Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas, also in attendance, echoed this sentiment.
My office will continue to work closely with other government agencies to enact, strengthen, and enforce "hate crime" laws. Hate crimes should be immediately reported to your local police department. I also urge residents who witness or experience threats, harassment, or violence based on race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation to call 1 (888) 392-3644 or file a civil rights complaint with the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
Together we will ensure that all individuals are free from harassment regardless of race, religion, or immigration status.
Sincerely, Honorable Michaelle C. Solages New York State Assembly Twenty-Second District
